The inaugural meeting of the D.S. Senanayake College Tamil Medium Past Students’ Society was held on 26 September 2026 at the Old Boys’ Association premises, bringing together approximately 60 past students representing batches from 1979 to 2025.
The meeting marked an important milestone in bringing together generations of Tamil Medium past students and establishing a united platform to strengthen communication, fellowship and collective contribution towards the school and its students.
A New Chapter Begins
The gathering commenced at approximately 4.45 p.m. with the singing of the D.S. Senanayake College School Song, followed by a welcome address by D. Lochanan (2022).
The newly appointed leadership and committee were then formally introduced to the members.
The office bearers were proposed and seconded for a two-year term and formally accepted by the members.
Building a Stronger Tamil Medium Community
In his address, President Mazloom Hassan (1991) spoke about the importance of creating a dedicated platform through which Tamil Medium past students from different generations can remain connected and actively contribute to the school.
He highlighted the need to address the lack of communication and involvement among past students and encouraged members to reconnect with their respective batches and expand the Society's network.
A long-term target of building a community of 2,000 members was discussed, with every member encouraged to play a role in reconnecting past students from their batch.
Supporting the School and Its Students
The meeting placed strong emphasis on supporting the present generation of Tamil Medium students.
Members discussed the importance of establishing closer communication with the Tamil Medium teachers, understanding the current needs of the students and identifying meaningful areas where past students can provide support.
Particular attention was given to extracurricular activities, including debating, sports and other student societies.
Members also discussed the importance of preserving the legacy of successful Tamil Medium activities from previous generations and creating opportunities for current students to benefit from the experience and guidance of past students.
Teachers’ Day 2026
Plans were discussed for a special Teachers’ Day programme during the first half of December 2026, bringing together past and current teachers with Tamil Medium past students.
The programme is intended to recognise and appreciate the teachers who have contributed to the education and development of generations of students.
The Society is also exploring arrangements to assist teachers who may require transportation to attend the programme.
Road to 60
The upcoming Road to 60 celebrations of D.S. Senanayake College were also discussed.
With the school's 60th anniversary celebration scheduled for 10 February 2027, the Society intends to contribute towards the celebrations and ensure that the achievements and contributions of Tamil Medium past students receive due recognition.
The meeting also discussed supporting the wider school community and celebrating past students who have excelled in areas such as sports and other fields.
Sports and Fellowship
Recognising sport as an important means of strengthening relationships between generations, the Society plans to organise sports activities involving past students from across the 47 Tamil Medium batches.
Fayaz Basheer (2007) and Ahamed Aneez (2012) will coordinate sports-related initiatives.
These activities are intended not only to promote healthy competition but also to strengthen friendships and unity among past students.
Strengthening Student Development
During the open forum, members shared valuable experiences and suggestions concerning the development of current students.
Dr. Anfas Farook proposed exploring community initiatives such as medical camps to support past students and the wider community.
Thusidharan (2017) highlighted the importance of rebuilding the Tamil Debate Society and reconnecting with the teachers who guide Tamil Medium students. Drawing from his own experience, he spoke about the strong debating legacy that existed among Tamil Medium students and the need to restore that culture through mentoring, training and active involvement by past students.
Afnan Unais (2022) and Sudharshanth (2019) spoke about the importance of allowing students to participate in extracurricular activities while maintaining their academic responsibilities. They emphasised that students have different talents and interests, including sports, debating, leadership and other activities, and should be given opportunities to develop these abilities.
The discussions reflected a common vision of creating an environment where students can pursue both academic and extracurricular development.
Strengthening the Connection Between Past Students and the School
Zia Ul Hassan (1996), Advisor to the Society, emphasised the importance of establishing a strong relationship with the current Tamil Medium teachers and understanding the needs of the section.
He highlighted the importance of engaging with Mr. Yogeshwaran and the teachers responsible for Tamil Medium, and working together to support students and extracurricular activities.
He also stressed the need for the Tamil Medium Past Students’ Society to develop into a strong and active community capable of contributing meaningfully to the school.
N. Bhavanishankar (1981), Senior Vice President, encouraged members from different generations to remain connected and actively participate in the Society. He highlighted the importance of unity, experience-sharing and maintaining strong relationships between senior and younger batches.
Strengthening the Wider School Community
Sanjika Perera, Vice President of the Old Boys’ Association, addressed the gathering and emphasised the importance of Tamil Medium past students supporting the school and becoming more actively involved in school-related activities.
He also encouraged members of the Society to engage with the wider school community and invited members to contribute towards the activities of the broader old students' community.
The upcoming Golden Ball 2026, scheduled for 17 October 2026 at Hilton Colombo, was also mentioned.

Looking Ahead

The meeting marked the beginning of a new chapter for Tamil Medium past students of D.S. Senanayake College.
From 1979 to 2025, generations of students have shared the same classrooms, teachers, experiences and memories. The establishment of the D.S. Senanayake College Tamil Medium Past Students’ Society provides an opportunity to reconnect those generations, preserve their legacy and transform that connection into meaningful support for the school and its students.
The journey has begun. The next chapter belongs to all of us.
